The northern section of Yellowstone is open year-round except during storms. The loop road passes by historical remnants of the original stewards of the park, the millitary. For over a century now, the main attraction here has been Mammoth Hot Springs and its landscape of small pools, limestone bowls, and draped rock formations. During the bitterly cold winter months the continuous stream of vapors coming off the waters envelops and coats anything standing near the springs. You may only be a mile or so from civilization, but it feels like you're alone in an alien landscape. Deeper into the park, during the winter months the wide open spaces of the Lamar valley shelter much of the northern section of the park's wildlife and you can glimpse the buffalo, big horn sheep, and deer as well as the wolf packs trying to survive off them.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for stopping by!
